Since the launch of the "Christmas and New Year 2024/2025 Operation" on December 18, the Guarda Nacional Republicana (GNR) has reported a devastating total of 20 fatalities due to road accidents. According to Major Lígia Santos, the first phase of the operation accounted for 11 deaths, while the second phase saw 9 additional fatalities.
Operation Duration and Accident Statistics
The operation concludes today at midnight. Over the past six days, from December 27 to January 1, there have been 908 recorded accidents, resulting in 9 fatalities, 24 serious injuries, and 301 minor injuries based on preliminary data.
Accident Locations
The fatalities during this second phase occurred across various districts: Setúbal, Viseu, Leiria, Faro, Santarém, and Braga, each reporting one death, with Lisbon tragically recording three fatalities.
GNR's Enforcement Actions
In their enforcement efforts, GNR has monitored 64,192 drivers, resulting in 700 cases of driving under the influence, leading to 338 arrests for blood alcohol levels of 1.2 g/l or higher. Additionally, 124 individuals were arrested for driving without a valid license.
Among the 12,786 traffic violations detected, GNR highlights include:
- 2,408 for speeding
- 362 for driving under the influence
- 301 for improper seat belt or child seat use.
Furthermore, the data reveals 173 violations for improper mobile phone use while driving, 1,027 for lack of mandatory periodic inspection, and 390 for insufficient civil liability insurance.
