A New Documentary on Organic Citrus Cultivation in the Algarve
A documentary short film about organic citrus cultivation in the Algarve, produced by Al-Bio Association, is set to premiere on November 7 in Tavira. This insightful film focuses on the cultivation of orange trees and reveals various practices applied during the conversion of orchards. It aims to characterize farm operations and supply chains, analyzing productivity per hectare and comparing the advantages and disadvantages of certified organic citrus production.
Titled “Citrinos em Modo de Produção Biológico”, this film features contributions from farmers and experts in the field. The content is directed by Ângela Rosa, with Henrique Mestre as the producer.
The premiere will take place at 6 PM at the auditorium of the Sotavento Algarvio Irrigation Plan Beneficiaries Association in Tavira. The session is free of charge, and interested attendees are encouraged to join at the specified time and location.
Key figures in the documentary, including farmers Elisa Campos (from Sociedade Agrícola da Gomeira) and Duarte Reis (from Vira Bio), as well as agronomists António Marreiros and Celestino Soares from CCDR Algarve I.P. Agriculture and Fisheries, will be in attendance.
The session will be opened by Al-Bio – Algarve Agroecological Association and feature speeches from Macário Correia, president of the Sotavento Algarvio Irrigation Plan Beneficiaries Association, and Pedro Valadas Monteiro, vice-president of CCDR Algarve/Agriculture and Fisheries.
At the end of the presentation, there will be an opportunity for public interaction, allowing for reflection and discussion on organic citrus cultivation in the Algarve.
This initiative is part of the MedAdap Tavira: Agroecology in a Mediterranean Context project, resulting from a protocol between Al-Bio and the municipality of Tavira. It aims to promote and support sustainable organic farming methods, ecological practices, and regenerative approaches, with the goal of optimizing water efficiency, minimizing environmental impact, and enhancing biodiversity, ultimately contributing to the health and well-being of the community.
