National Maritime Authority Coordinates Rescue of Abandoned Vessel
The National Maritime Authority (AMN) coordinated efforts to refloat an abandoned American-flagged boat at the commercial dock in Vila Real de Santo António, Algarve. The alert was raised at 10:00 AM on Monday when authorities were informed that the vessel was listing dangerously.
During the operation to stabilize the boat, containment barriers were deployed by the Port Captaincy to prevent potential pollution, as three water ingress points were detected inside the vessel. The AMN stated that firefighters and a contracted company from DocaPesca were involved in removing the water and repairing the leaks.
Personnel from the Port Captaincy and the Local Command of the Maritime Police of Vila Real de Santo António, along with the Rapid Intervention Brigade for Pollution Combat (BIRPOL) from the Southern Maritime Department (DMS), were activated to the site.
The Port Captaincy and the Maritime Police are maintaining surveillance to ensure the vessel's stability.
