Urgent Gynecology and Obstetrics Services in Lisbon Remain Closed: What You Need to Know

Five Gynecology and Obstetrics emergency services remain closed this Monday, predominantly in the Lisbon area, according to official information. Additionally, a pediatric emergency service is also shut down.

As per the emergency schedules published on the SNS Portal, as of 11:30 PM on Sunday, the closed services include:

  • Hospital de São Bernardo, Setúbal
  • Hospital Nossa Senhora do Rosário, Barreiro
  • Hospital de São Francisco Xavier, Lisbon
  • Hospital das Caldas da Rainha
  • Hospital de Santo André, Leiria

This week, Thursday and Saturday will see the highest number of closed Gynecology emergencies - seven in total.

The pediatric emergency service at Hospital Nossa Senhora do Rosário in Barreiro, Setúbal district, will also be closed today.

According to the same SNS Portal information, pediatric emergencies will be available at hospitals in Viseu during the night and at Hospital Fernando da Fonseca (Amadora-Sintra) also during the night.

Hospitals Santa Maria in Lisbon and Garcia de Orta in Almada will only receive referred cases, which are reserved for internal emergencies and cases referred by the Urgent Patient Orientation Centers (CODU) of the National Institute of Medical Emergency (INEM) and by the SNS 24 line.

The Executive Management of the SNS urges the public to always call the SOS Grávida Line [808 24 24 24] before heading to a Gynecology emergency service.

According to data from the Shared Services of the Ministry of Health (SPMS) released last Friday, the SNS Grávidas Line, part of SNS 24, received 16,141 calls between June 1 and July 26, with 8,268 calls related to screenings conducted in June.

In two months, around 2,490 users were referred for primary health care, and 11,209 for hospital emergency services, with 246 referred to INEM.

The data also reveals that over 13.5% of pregnant women were advised to stay in self-care.

As for the number of attendances handled by SNS 24 in the first eight months of the year, the data indicate a total of 1,875,56, which is 9,493 fewer than the same period in 2023.

According to the numbers, 610,941 users were redirected to hospital emergencies, and 461,379 to primary health care.
