Seven urgent services in Gynecology and Obstetrics and one in Pediatrics are closed today, as reported by the National Health Service (SNS).

As of 9:00 AM, five Gynecology and Obstetrics services are closed in the Lisbon and Tagus Valley region, including:

  • Hospital de São Bernardo in Setúbal
  • Hospital Nossa Senhora do Rosário in Barreiro
  • Hospital de Garcia de Orta in Almada

Today marks the closure of an additional service compared to Tuesday, specifically at the Hospital de São Francisco Xavier in Lisbon.

In the central region, the Hospital de Santo André in Leiria has closed, and in the Algarve, the Hospital de Portimão (Obstetrics) is also shut down.

The Urgent Gynecology and Obstetrics service at Hospital Fernando Fonseca (Amadora-Sintra) is only available from midnight to 8 AM and 8 PM to midnight, prioritizing internal emergencies and referrals from the Urgent Patient Orientation Center (CODU) and the SNS 24 hotline.

Additionally, the Pediatrics Emergency Service at Hospital Nossa Senhora do Rosário is closed. Meanwhile, the Pediatrics services at hospitals in Viseu and Amadora-Sintra have limited hours.

The upcoming holiday on Thursday is expected to see the closure of seven Gynecology and Obstetrics services, with further closures scheduled for the following days, including four on Friday, seven on Saturday, and six on Sunday. Pediatric services are also expected to face closures throughout the weekend.

In a recent report, the SNS Executive Directorate noted that 114 births were conducted in the Lisbon and Tagus Valley region over the past weekend, with the highest numbers recorded at the Loures-Odivelas Health Unit and MAC.

On Monday, with five Gynecology and Obstetrics services closed, Maternidade Alfredo da Costa (MAC) had 98 admissions and carried out 25 births, including five cesarean sections, marking the highest number since 2013.

The SNS urges the public to always call the SOS Grávida Line [808 24 24 24] before heading to a Gynecology emergency service.
