Valete’s Artistic Collaboration with Local Students
Valete, the renowned rapper, was invited to work with a class from the Escola Básica (EB) 2,3 Pintor Almada Negreiros to initiate a reflection on their lives in Europe. This initiative is part of the “Liquid Becomings” project, linked to the upcoming The European Pavilion 2024 artistic biennial.
A Spotlight on the Community
Alfredo Martins, one of the curators, emphasized the importance of bringing these students from a socially fragile area of Lisbon into the discussion, highlighting the often-overlooked eastern part of the city. The school is located near the airport and is characterized by its cultural diversity.
Creating Music and Sharing Feelings
In the performance titled “Putos di Kebrada”, students will present two original songs crafted with Valete’s guidance. For the first song, students were challenged to express their feelings as if they were alone, allowing them to explore deep emotions such as depression and emptiness. One student shared her experiences of living in her neighborhood, while others spoke about police violence.
Aspirations for Their School
For the second song, students voiced their desires for improvements at their school, asking for more funding, larger classrooms, and air conditioning. Some expressed a wish for additional subjects, such as Spanish and German.
A Unique Experience for Everyone
Valete described the experience as spectacular, especially since none of the students had prior music-making experience. They are recording and writing lyrics for the first time, which poses a significant challenge.
Student Reflections
During a rehearsal observed by Lusa, students expressed how enjoyable and enriching the project has been. Yasmin, who initially wasn’t a rap fan, shared her thoughts through her lyrics about her daily life, while Paulo, the only aspiring musician in the class, gave advice about kindness and support.
Upcoming Show and Programming
The culmination of Valete’s collaboration will be showcased this Saturday at the school, open to the public as part of the “Liquid Becomings” programming. This event includes various activities, many of which are free. The project also features artistic journeys along four European rivers, exploring their unique landscapes and stories.
A Diverse Schedule of Events
The programming will take place from Thursday to Saturday and includes concerts, audio walks, exhibitions, DJ performances, and more. A highlight will be the presentation of a new text by Gonçalo M. Tavares, read by actress Tita Maravilha, with a visual performance by artist Adriana Proganó at the Biblioteca de Marvila.
