Commemorating a Controversial Date
This Monday, the Assembly of the Republic commemorates the 49th anniversary of the 25th of November, in a manner similar to the 50th anniversary of the 25th of April, albeit with shorter speeches and without the traditional red carnations.
Political Divide
Left-wing parties unanimously opposed a proposal by the CDS to annually commemorate the 25th of November 1975, which was approved with votes from PSD, CDS, Chega, and IL.
The BE (Left Bloc) will be represented in parliament by one deputy, aiming to "denounce the devaluation" of the 1974 revolution. Meanwhile, Livre also plans to attend, arguing that this is an unqualifiable attempt to undermine the historical significance of the 25th of April. The PCP (Portuguese Communist Party) will not attend, citing the anti-democratic objectives of diminishing and erasing the Carnation Revolution.
A Voice of Dissent
Vasco Lourenço, a key figure in both the 25th of April and the 25th of November, will not be present at the session. He expressed that "History cannot be distorted" and labeled this commemoration as "a hypocrisy" from right-wing parties.
