Algarve's Oncology Center Project
The Regional Coordination and Development Commission (CCDR) of the Algarve has officially invited the Local Health Unit (ULS) of the Algarve to apply for European funds for the construction of the Oncology Center of the Algarve. This center will be a specialized technological infrastructure focused on the prevention and treatment of cancer, located in the Parque das Cidades (Loulé/Faro).
The ULS, which manages healthcare in the Algarve and integrates both the Algarve University Hospital Center (CHUA) and the Regional Health Administration, has until December 30 to submit its proposal under a specific notice directed to them.
A Long-Awaited Support
This invitation marks the formal announcement of a long-anticipated support that was included in the Algarve 2030 program, following negotiations with the European Union. According to José Apolinário, president of CCDR Algarve, the health sector had various options, and they opted to advocate for funding for a regional center dedicated to oncology, addressing the discriminatory situation of cancer care in the Algarve.
Addressing Regional Needs
Currently, patients often need to travel to Lisbon or Seville for treatment, highlighting the urgent need for local solutions. The aim is to create a center that works in conjunction with the future Central Hospital, addressing the lack of facilities for cancer treatment in the region. A preliminary budget of €9 million has been earmarked for this project, which may be increased based on functional needs.
In June 2023, after securing land for the center, the CHUA launched an International Public Competition for the execution and specialty projects for the Reference Oncology Center of the South (CORS). The total investment is projected at €14 million, with 40% funded by CHUA and the remainder through the Algarve 2030 Regional Program. The center is expected to cater to up to 3,000 cancer patients annually.
Comprehensive Cancer Care
The future facility will span approximately 5,500 square meters and will integrate into the National Health Service, providing all necessary oncology and imaging services to ensure patients do not have to leave the region.
CORS will encompass various specialties including medical oncology, surgery, radiation oncology, nuclear medicine, cardiology, pathology, nutrition, chronic pain management, rehabilitation medicine, palliative care, and social support, allowing patients to receive integrated and multidisciplinary treatment in one visit.
According to CCDR, the project will serve a population of 800,000, offering diagnostic capabilities and follow-up care for patients, while also fostering research in the region and attracting qualified human resources. The estimated cost for the project has been adjusted to €12 million, with €8 million from EU funds and €4 million from CHUA's own capital.
