A Celebration of Olive Oil in Lisbon

On November 30, Lisbon will host a free-entry market dedicated entirely to Portuguese olive oil. The Olive Festival aims to enhance literacy about olive oil and showcase the richness and diversity of Portuguese oils.

With the curation of journalist Edgardo Pacheco, the festival will feature various national producers from across the country and five guest chefs: Bertílio Gomes, Leopoldo Calhau, Udi Barkan, Teresa Colaço, and Gonçalo Ribeiro (executive chef at Praça). They will prepare five unique dishes using different olive oils, available to the public starting at €8. Desserts will also feature olive oil, with Rui Pascoalinho from Pascoalini's ice cream shop creating artisan ice creams infused with this star ingredient.

Technical Tastings and Discussions

The festival includes technical tastings at 12:00 PM, limited to groups of 15 for €15 per participant. These sessions, led by Pacheco and Ana Carrilho, will explore the aromas and flavors of traditional Portuguese olive oils, alongside a common defective oil.

A talk at 3:00 PM, free of charge, will feature Pacheco, Carlos Coelho (president of Ivity Brand Corp), and several producers discussing “Education and Brand Culture in Olive Oil - 10 Steps Forward.” The goal is to strategize on transforming olive oil from a commodity into a premium product akin to fine wines and spices.

Family-Friendly Activities

This event is designed for the entire family, with Magnolia Method, a non-profit organization supporting youth, hosting a workshop called “Little Olive Tree” from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM. This workshop will include hands-on activities that promote creativity and teach about the nature and culture of olives and olive oil. To keep the atmosphere lively, DJ Fabz will perform from 7:00 PM to 11:00 PM.
