Trás-os-Montes Wine Showcase in Algarve
Seventeen Trás-os-Montes wine producers will converge in Vilamoura this Saturday, April 5, to showcase their exceptional wines, which remain largely undiscovered in the southern regions of Portugal. This exciting event will take place at the Tivoli Vilamoura Hotel from 3 PM to 8 PM, featuring around 100 wines available for tasting, alongside engaging conversations between consumers and producers.
A Rich Terroir
The northeast of Marão boasts 9,000 hectares of vineyards and 110 producers, yielding approximately 2.2 million liters of wine annually. However, most consumers south of the Douro River pay little attention to Trás-os-Montes wines, with only a few producers gaining notable recognition due to their unique offerings and effective communication.
Old Vines and Unique Varietals
Divided into three sub-regions, Trás-os-Montes wines benefit from their terroir, specific grape varieties, and old vineyards. These old vines often produce challenging reds that are lighter in color yet refreshingly unique, standing out from traditional wines that are more extracted and standardized. Varietals such as Tinta Amarela, Bastardo, and Tinta Gorda are celebrated for their distinctive qualities, diverging positively from the region's more common varieties like Touriga Nacional and Tinta Roriz.
Revitalizing Ancient Techniques
The Trás-os-Montes Regional Wine Commission (CVRTM) is actively working to revive ancient granite wine presses, which are abundant in the region. This initiative not only highlights the uniqueness of Trás-os-Montes wines but also ensures they are certified, enhancing their market appeal. Since the first harvest, the quality of these wines has shown significant improvement.
A Unique Experience Awaits
For sommeliers working in the Algarve, the opportunity to explain that these wines are produced from grapes crushed in ancient open-air granite lagares is a powerful professional advantage, especially when engaging with knowledgeable wine enthusiasts.
Participating producers include Casa do Joa, Casa José Pedro, Encostas de Sonim, and many more. Tickets for this event, organized by CVRTM, can be purchased on-site for 10 euros.
