Ombria Algarve: A New Era in Golfing
The latest golf course in the Algarve, nestled within the luxurious sustainable destination of Ombria in Loulé, has been awarded the Best New Golf Course in Europe at the 2024 World Golf Awards. This prestigious recognition highlights the excellence and innovation that Ombria Algarve embodies.
Designed by renowned Portuguese architect Jorge Santana da Silva, the 18-hole world-class course integrates harmoniously with the region's natural landscape. It emphasizes sustainable practices that protect local biodiversity while providing a challenging experience for golfers.
Ombria Algarve continues to emerge as a prime destination for golf enthusiasts seeking authentic and exclusive experiences. The development features a wide array of premium residences and includes the Viceroy at Ombria Algarve, a five-star hotel that opened on October 1, 2024. This hotel is the first of the American brand Viceroy Hotels & Resorts in Southern Europe, offering 141 rooms, suites, and apartments, along with a spa, gym, multiple restaurants and bars, a kids' club, a conference center, and several heated pools.
Golf Director Salvador Costa Macedo expressed, “It is an honor for Ombria Algarve to receive this significant award, celebrating our commitment to quality, sustainability, and the unique experience we offer golfers worldwide.”
With a strong focus on environmental responsibility, the design considerations for the golf course included reducing grass areas, preserving native river landscapes, conserving forests, and repopulating native species. An efficient irrigation system has also been implemented to address the unique natural characteristics of the area.
Owned by the Pontos Group, a Finnish family office, Ombria aims to pioneer a new generation of destinations where authenticity, environmental sustainability, and integration with the local community are fundamental pillars.
This award was presented during the 11th edition of the World Golf Awards, held in Funchal, where Portugal was also recognized as the Best Golf Destination in the World.
In 2019, the Ombria Algarve Golf Course received certification from the GEO Foundation for Sustainable Golf, which sets the highest sustainability standards across six key areas: nature, water, energy, supply chain, pollution control, and community.
This award reinforces Ombria Algarve's commitment to redefining the concepts of golf and luxury tourism, fostering a genuine connection with nature and local culture.
