Summary:

  • Douro region to produce 90,000 barrels of Port wine again, same as in 1974.

  • Sales of Port wine remain strong with 119,180 barrels sold in 2023.

  • Proposal for a tourist tax of 10 euros for visitors to receive a bottle of Port wine.

Douro's Wine Production Returns

Fifty years later, the Douro region is set to produce the same amount of Port wine as it did in the year of the April Revolution: 90,000 barrels. While some view this figure as a setback, the sales of Port wine remain robust, with 119,180 barrels sold in 2023. This figure, although declining over the last two decades, is still impressive when compared to other fortified wines globally, such as Sherry from Spain.

A Proposal for a Tourist Tax

Why not implement a tourist tax in the Douro? Each visitor staying in the region could pay around 10 euros and receive a small bottle of Port wine in return. This initiative could not only help support local producers but also enhance the tourist experience, making it a win-win situation for both visitors and the region's economy.
