Lisbon's City Council has approved a change in dates for the Kalorama music festival, moving it to June 19-21, 2025, instead of the previously scheduled August dates. This decision comes after a request from the festival's promoter, Kalorama Festival Unipessoal, LDA. The reasoning behind this shift is to ensure a better lineup of artists, as availability tends to dwindle in late August.
The proposal, backed by PSD/CDS-PP leadership, highlights the importance of the festival for cultural promotion and enhancing Lisbon's image. It also addresses logistical concerns, allowing for setup from May 26 to June 18, followed by dismantling until July 6, totaling a 41-day occupation of the venue at Parque da Bela Vista.
The council also discussed providing non-financial support for the festival, estimated at €988,579, which includes exemptions from municipal fees. This support faced criticism from opposition parties, who argue against subsidizing profitable private events.
The decision to avoid August is based on the observation that it is a peak summer month, leading to decreased attendance from locals. The city aims to ensure the festival's success aligns with its cultural and promotional goals for Lisbon and Portugal.
