A Classic in Lisbon
‘The Phantom of the Opera’, a classic by Andrew Lloyd Webber that has won over 70 prestigious theater awards (including seven Tonys on Broadway and four Olivier Awards), is currently showing in Lisbon until October 27 at Sagres Campo Pequeno.
The production features Portuguese singer Lara Martins in the leading cast and boasts stunning details that promise to make this one of the season's must-see shows.
Costume and Set Design
The show includes over 200 different costumes, totaling 1,000 pieces. “There are 20 costume changes during the performance, one of which occurs on stage,” said a source from Broadway Entertainment, the company bringing the show to Lisbon.
The cast consists of 80 members, including the orchestra. The large-scale set features a famous replica of the Paris Opera chandelier, a breathtaking design complemented by moments of pyrotechnics and other special effects. The chandelier measures 3.2 meters wide and weighs 650 kg, and it drops at a speed of 2.5 meters per second for a stunning effect.
Behind the Scenes
Behind the scenes, the atmosphere is bustling just hours before the show. The makeup for the Phantom takes 90 minutes to apply and 30 minutes to remove. The process includes hydrating the face, shaving, and adjusting protheses. The final touches involve two wigs, two microphones, and two contact lenses (one white and one opaque). All of this ensures that this production, which has been performed in 46 countries, 195 cities, and 19 languages, leaves a lasting impression on its audience.
