On January 13, the Municipal Theatre of Portimão will host the seminar “Thinking Tourism, Thinking Algarve”. This event is organized by the Manuel Teixeira Gomes Higher Institute (ISMAT) in collaboration with Tourism of Portugal, alongside the Hospitality and Tourism schools in Faro, Portimão, and Vila Real de Santo António.

The seminar aims to address the critical role of tourism in the Algarve's economy and explore innovative strategies to enhance the region's appeal to both national and international visitors. As tourism continues to evolve, understanding market trends and visitor preferences becomes essential for sustainable growth.

Insights on Visitor Trends

According to recent statistics from the National Institute of Statistics (INE) of Spain, the country welcomed 88.5 million visitors by November 2024, generating €118 billion in revenue, surpassing the total for all of 2023. This represents a 10.7% increase in visitors and a 16.7% rise in revenue compared to the same period last year.

In November alone, Spain attracted 5.6 million international tourists, marking a 10.3% increase from November 2023. The average spending per visitor was €1,361, reflecting a 5.2% rise compared to the previous year.

Key Markets and Visitor Statistics

Noteworthy trends include a significant influx from the United Kingdom, contributing over 1 million tourists in November, followed by France and Germany. Portugal also experienced a 21.4% increase in tourists, totaling 176,000 visitors in November.

The seminar will delve into these statistics and their implications for the Algarve, aiming to foster discussions on how to attract more visitors and enhance their experiences in the region.
