Climáximo Organizes Protest in Lisbon

The environmental movement Climáximo is calling for a "mass civil resistance demonstration" this Saturday in Lisbon, titled "Stop While We Can". This protest aims to mobilize the public against the normalization of climate crisis violence perpetuated by governments and corporations, highlighting the recent floods in Valencia, Spain as a stark reminder of climate change's consequences.

In a statement, the movement emphasizes the need for a "mass popular mobilization" to dismantle the fossil fuel industry and implement a socially just transition plan that respects planetary boundaries.

Inês Teles, the spokesperson for Climáximo, expressed concern over the lack of public awareness in Portugal regarding the upcoming COP29 conference in Azerbaijan, criticizing the "total normalization of collapse" while fossil governments and corporations continue to expand their carbon agendas.

The COP29 is criticized for being marked by "empty discussions", especially with a climate denier elected as president of the USA and the approval of the Portuguese State Budget, which treats the climate crisis as a mere footnote.

The protest, set to start at 3 PM at Praça Paiva Couceiro, will feature popular assemblies to discuss climate issues. Activists plan to block Praça do Chile to disrupt the "catastrophic normalcy" in the country and create space for urgent discussions that are absent in power centers.

The movement insists on the necessity of collective action in response to what they describe as the "greatest crisis humanity has ever faced", stressing that climate, environmental, and social issues are interconnected and impact everyone in this critical historical moment.
