Justice Minister's Stance on Real Estate Holdings

Rita Júdice, Portugal's Minister of Justice, has firmly stated that she has no intention of divesting her personal assets, which she claims were built through her own work and that of her family. This declaration came in response to news reports highlighting her involvement in four real estate companies, owning 50% stakes in two firms—Périplo Essencial and Pedrasgest—that operate in the real estate and tourism sectors. Additionally, she holds a 30% stake in Canforeira, which focuses solely on buying and selling properties, and a smaller percentage in Stone SPA, which operates in both beauty and real estate sectors.

Júdice emphasized that these companies do not own any properties that could benefit from land-use laws, thus claiming there is no conflict of interest. Her statement comes after the Minister of Cohesion, Manuel Castro Almeida, revealed his decision to sell his share in a real estate company amid public scrutiny about the implications of such holdings.

In contrast, Júdice maintains that her holdings do not pose any ethical issues, asserting, "These societies do not have any properties that could benefit from land-use laws, and therefore, there is no conflict of interest."
