Update on the Protests
Despite the ban, the political party Ergue-te remains determined to hold their event. The Lisbon City Council has decided to follow the PSP's recommendation and prohibit protests scheduled for this Friday, which coincides with the April 25 holiday, in the Martim Moniz area of Lisbon. An official source from the municipality stated that they would act as they usually do in such situations, adhering to the PSP's assessment.
Rui Fonseca e Castro, president of Ergue-te, formerly known as the Partido Nacional Renovador, announced that the party would proceed with the protest. In a video shared on Telegram, he stated, "Tomorrow, starting at 3 PM, we will all be at Martim Moniz, for a celebration of Portuguese identity and a demonstration of civility and brotherhood."
Official Justification for the Ban
The council, led by Carlos Moedas, noted that the PSP deemed the conditions for safety were not met, and the planned events could threaten public order and tranquility. However, Rui Fonseca e Castro disputes this decision, claiming it lacks legal authority. He argues that the event is a political gathering associated with the upcoming elections on May 18 and cannot be prohibited.
He further mentioned that the party had sought clarification from the National Elections Commission, which allowed the event under the classification of a cultural activity. "The police should ensure adequate presence, but we assure you that there will be no issues on our part," he added.
Response from the National Elections Commission
The National Elections Commission (CNE) has denied receiving any request for approval regarding the Martim Moniz protest. A source from the CNE confirmed that they had not received any such request as of now and would provide more information later regarding the legality of prohibiting or altering the route of a protest organized by a political party.
PSP's Concerns
On Thursday, the PSP issued a negative opinion on the scheduled protests in the Martim Moniz area for the April 25 holiday. They cited the potential for conflicts due to multiple protests occurring simultaneously with distinct ideological objectives. The PSP made this decision following a standard risk assessment to ensure public order.
The Ergue-te party, along with the Habeas Corpus movement, announced plans for a protest featuring “pig on a spit” in Martim Moniz, coinciding with the traditional April 25 celebration parade on Avenida da Liberdade. The PSP has called on citizens to adopt correct, legal, and legitimate behaviors to ensure that the celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of April 25 can proceed peacefully and with civility.
