On Thursday, President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa of Portugal accused Donald Trump, the U.S. President, of favoring Russia at the expense of the European Union in the ongoing crisis in Ukraine. Speaking at a dinner at the Palácio Nacional da Ajuda in honor of French President Emmanuel Macron, Rebelo de Sousa criticized Trump's break from the policies of his predecessor, Joe Biden, and the post-World War II foreign policy framework.

Rebelo de Sousa highlighted that Trump has questioned the sovereignty of allies like Canada, Denmark, and the United Kingdom, suggesting that his approach undermines NATO. He expressed concern over Trump's calls for a peace agreement with Russia that excludes European intervention, which he believes diminishes Ukraine's sovereignty.

Trump's Position on Ukraine

The Portuguese President pointed out that Trump's stance has included attacks on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, promoting Russian conditions for peace that disregard Ukraine's NATO aspirations and threaten internationally recognized borders. Furthermore, he noted Trump's rejection of EU participation in peace negotiations and potential cuts in U.S. support for Europe.

Criticism of U.S. Vice President

Rebelo de Sousa also criticized U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance for his remarks at the Munich Security Conference, where he allegedly interfered in the internal politics of EU states, particularly Germany.

Macron's Remarks on European Defense

In his speech, Emmanuel Macron echoed these sentiments, stating that Europe is under threat from various fronts and emphasized the need for a united defense strategy among European nations. He praised Rebelo de Sousa's remarks and reiterated the importance of a strong, coherent Europe.

Macron's visit to Portugal marks the first state visit by a French head of state in 26 years, during which he announced plans to sign significant bilateral agreements.
