Mendes Launches Presidential Campaign in Fafe

Former PSD leader and commentator Marques Mendes has officially launched his presidential campaign in his hometown of Fafe, but notably did not invite any national figures from the PSD. This decision, made in coordination with Luís Montenegro, reflects Mendes' intention to appeal to a broader electorate, particularly in the political center.

The event will feature only two speeches: one from Mendes himself and another from the local mayor, Antero Barbosa, a member of the Socialist Party (PS). Mendes is strategically avoiding hostility towards the PS as he aims for a more inclusive candidacy, which he hopes will attract votes from both the PSD and PS. The mayor's address is expected to be more of a welcoming gesture rather than a political statement.

Mendes emphasizes the importance of connecting with the people during this campaign launch, mirroring the approach of Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, who also began his presidential campaign in a personal manner a decade ago. The event is set for 6 PM this Thursday at the local misericórdia, named after his father, António Marques Mendes, who founded the institution. Mendes takes pride in his deep roots in Fafe, where he was born and raised, and where he previously served as a councilor and vice president at just 19 years old.

Interestingly, Mendes recalls that his father, during his tenure as mayor, awarded the honorary title of “Cidadão Honorário do Concelho” to Baltasar Rebelo de Sousa, the father of the current president, marking a historical connection between their families.
