In a heartfelt farewell at SIC, where he has been a commentator for 12 years, LuĂs Marques Mendes announced three key slogans for his upcoming presidential campaign set to launch in Fafe this Thursday: "Ambition," "Stability," and "Ethics."

Ambition

Mendes expressed his concern over the current state of the nation, describing Portugal as generally complacent and resigned, sometimes even depressed. He vowed to combat this "disease" of low ambition, urging citizens to strive for more.

Stability

Another crucial slogan from Mendes is "Stability." He argued that the country cannot endure a cycle of dissolutions and early elections. Citing the example of Madeira, which experiences elections every six months, he pledged to build bridges to achieve political stability and avoid crises.

Ethics

Reflecting on his past as PSD leader, Mendes recalled making tough decisions, such as opposing the candidacy of Isaltino Morais in 2005 due to ethical concerns. He emphasized the need for a stronger ethical stance in politics, acknowledging that many Portuguese citizens are fed up with politicians and political parties. He stressed the importance of restoring trust in the political system.

Mendes is approaching the presidential election with humility and determination, stating that every fight is challenging, but he views difficulties as a stimulus rather than a setback. He believes that political experience is essential for a head of state, especially as figures like Gouveia e Melo, who lack such experience, lead in polls.

Beyond the presidential race, Mendes commented on the recent resignation of Secretary of State Hernâni Dias, calling it inevitable and emphasizing the need for explanations in the Assembly of the Republic. He praised the country’s economic performance, noting growth above the EU average, and commended the PSP for reduced violent crime rates, highlighting the role of local leaders in maintaining community safety.
