The government has recently decided to ease land laws, allowing municipalities to release land, especially **rustic land**, for the construction of **public housing** or at “moderate prices.” This move has been criticized by **Helena Freitas**, a biodiversity and ecology professor at the University of Coimbra. ### Cleanup Efforts in Funchal

The streets of **Funchal** woke up on Tuesday, December 24th, looking fresh and clean after the lively **Night Market** celebrations. 

The **Department of Environment** of the Municipal Chamber of Funchal mobilized **140 workers** and **25 vehicles** for the extensive cleanup operations that began at **6 AM** and are expected to continue until **8 PM**.

By **7 AM**, the **Dr. Fernão de Ornelas Street** showed no signs of the previous night’s festivities. All the typical food and drink stalls that had filled the street were gone, and the usual post-party litter had been completely cleared away.

The busiest road in the Madeira capital will host a **press conference** organized by the municipality at **11 AM** today to present the results of the cleanup operation following the Night Market event.
