Pedro Nuno Santos, the leader of the Socialist Party (PS), has responded to backlash regarding his recent statements on immigration, asserting that there is no hidden strategy behind his comments, contrary to claims made by former Education Minister. He emphasized that the remarks were simply a critical evaluation of the party's past actions regarding immigration policy.
Key Statements from Pedro Nuno Santos
In a recent statement, he clarified:
“There is a continuous effort to look forward while also reflecting on what we have done, what has gone well, what has not, and what needs to be changed.”
He reiterated that this kind of critical assessment is essential for a mature party like the PS, stating:
“This is part of the evaluation work that a mature party must undertake on various issues.”
Immigration Policy and Party Reflection
Santos faced criticism after admitting that the party had made mistakes in its immigration approach. He firmly stated that there would be no reversal on the manifestation of interest regime, which was abolished under the former government.
In an interview with Expresso, he added that foreigners wishing to live in Portugal must respect local customs and culture, particularly regarding the treatment of women. The former minister Ana Catarina Mendes criticized the PS's shift in stance on immigration, alleging a drift towards right-wing rhetoric.
Santos responded to questions about whether he overstepped by condemning some of his party's policies, emphasizing the importance of self-reflection:
“How can the PS regain the trust of the Portuguese people if we do not have the capacity to look at our actions and draw conclusions?”
He acknowledged the significance of immigration for the economy but stressed the need to maintain national and social cohesion.
No Reversal on Immigration Proposals
Santos assured that there would be no regression in the proposed immigration policies:
“The changes we propose will not be a return to the manifestation of interest. There will be no backtracking on what I said.”
Support from Party Members
In light of the criticism, Alexandra Leitão, a fellow socialist, defended Santos, calling for calm amid the backlash. She highlighted that the PS was merely pointing out the legal void created by the previous government's decisions. Furthermore, Carlos César, the PS president, praised Santos's courage in addressing immigration issues, asserting that there was no condemnation of the party's past.
“It is unacceptable to associate the PS secretary-general with right-wing positions,” he declared, addressing Mendes's comments.
