Concerns Over Road Safety in Portugal
The Ministry of Internal Administration has yet to deliver its national road safety strategy, but has assured the public that a timeline will be communicated as soon as it is established. Minister Margarida Blasco emphasized the importance of road safety, stating that life is "precious".
Minister's Worries
During a recent statement in Alverca, Lisbon, Blasco expressed her concern regarding the alarming statistics released during the Operation Festas Mais Seguras by the National Republican Guard (GNR).
"I am worried, as all Portuguese should be worried. Internal security includes road safety," she stated.
In response to the road safety statistics, the minister promised a thorough analysis of the data collected during the operation, which will inform a new strategy targeting road accidents, structured around five key areas.
An Important Reminder
Blasco issued a reminder to all drivers that their lives are "precious" and urged them to prioritize safety on the roads.
When questioned about potential new restrictions for drivers, she refrained from making any comments.
Visibility for Safety
Blasco also addressed her choice of wearing a GNR vest, noting that it serves as a reminder for drivers to wear their vests and signal any stops on the highway.
Awaiting the Strategy
Regarding the timeline for the national road safety strategy, she stated, "You will be informed at an appropriate time. We have been in government since April 2nd, and the strategy presented is under review. Once we finalize our reflections, it will be approved and implemented. I do not have a date, but it will be communicated to all media outlets."
Ongoing Operation
The operation began on December 18 and will continue until January 2, with 15 fatalities reported so far.
