Portuguese Navy Monitors Russian Naval Force for Over 24 Hours

The Portuguese Navy has tracked a Russian naval force, comprising a frigate and a replenishment ship, as it passed through areas of national maritime interest over the past 24 hours.

The operation monitored the frigate Neustrashimy and the replenishment ship Yelnya, which crossed areas of national maritime interest and the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of the Azores, heading towards the Caribbean.

The Maritime Operations Center coordinated with the Azores Maritime Zone Command to deploy the Sines ocean patrol vessel, which began monitoring early Saturday morning.

This monitoring, which took place in the extreme northwest of the Azores EEZ, ended this morning, having lasted for over 24 hours. The Navy stated that through these monitoring and surveillance actions, it "guarantees the defense and security of the maritime spaces under national sovereignty, jurisdiction, or responsibility."

These operations, according to the statement, also contribute to the protection of Portugal's interests and its critical infrastructure and ensure compliance with international commitments assumed within the framework of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
