A Waterspout and a Mini-Tornado: Unusual Weather Events in Algarve
Recently, the Algarve region experienced two rare weather phenomena. First, a waterspout was spotted at Porto de Mós beach in Lagos. Shortly after, an extreme wind event in Silves resulted in injuries.
In Silves, a 72-year-old man suffered minor injuries when a small tornado knocked down a pole onto a garage in São Bartolomeu de Messines. According to the Civil Protection authorities, this incident occurred around 10:00 AM due to a sudden burst of strong winds in the Vale Barriga area.
The intense winds also damaged the roofs of two homes, but fortunately, there were no reports of homes becoming uninhabitable. The heavy rainfall that followed in central Algarve, particularly affecting the municipalities of Loulé and Faro, led to minor flooding on public roads and in garages. The Civil Protection noted that there were no significant personal or material damages reported.
Hours later, Huelva, Spain, located about 100 km from the Algarve border, was struck by a tornado. This tornado caused extensive damage, uprooting trees, knocking down poles and trash bins, and tearing off roofs from some houses in Pozo del Camino, Aymonte, and Lepe. Fortunately, there were no casualties, but the destruction was considerable.
Tornado in Huelva wreaks havoc: fallen trees and collapsed roofs
The tornado has caused significant material damage to homes, roads, and electrical lines in the affected areas without any serious injuries reported.
