Record-Breaking August: Algarve Welcomes Surge of Portuguese Tourists

Algarve’s Tourist Boom in August

In August 2024, the Algarve welcomed 269,255 Portuguese guests, marking a 7.6% increase compared to the same month in 2023, according to data from the INE.

This surge comes after a 5.7% decline in July and a 9.7% drop from August of the previous year, when fewer national tourists visited compared to 2022.

Total Guests in Algarve

The Algarve recorded a total of 747,000 guests in August, bolstered by a 1.6% increase in foreign visitors. It ranked as the third region with the most guests, following Norte with 889,000 and Grande Lisboa with 842,000.

Historic Overnight Stays

Portugal saw a new record high of 10.5 million overnight stays, a 3.8% increase from August 2023. The British market remained the largest contributor to overnight stays, holding a 17.1% share among non-resident visitors.

All regions reported increases in overnight stays, except for Madeira, which saw a 0.3% decrease. The largest growth was in the SetĂşbal Peninsula (8.1%) and the Azores (7.5%), while the Algarve experienced a modest rise of 1.1%.

Average Stay Duration

The average duration of stay in tourist accommodations was 2.8 nights, a 2% decrease from the previous year. The highest stays were recorded in Madeira (4.8 nights) and the Algarve (4.3 nights). Significant declines were noted in Madeira (-3.9%), Grande Lisboa (-2.7%), and the Algarve (-2.5%).
