Sardines Arrive at Quarteira Auction
Sardines have started to make their way to the Quarteira auction in Loulé early Monday morning, marking the reopening of sardine fishing. Approximately ten tons of sardines were unloaded during the early hours, with prices reaching three euros per kilogram, significantly higher than the 75 cents to one euro recorded at the Sesimbra dock. In the main sardine dock of the Greater Lisbon area, 13.5 tons were unloaded on the first day of the fishing season.
Current Quality of Sardines
However, fishermen have warned that the sardines are not at their best yet. According to Miguel Cardoso from Olhãopesca - Organization of Producers of Fishing in the Algarve, the sardines are smaller, less fatty, and still far from the ideal quality for grilling.
Quota and Regulations
The sardine fishing season reopened after a four-month closure, with Portugal holding a quota of 34,406 tons for this year. Fishing is subject to various limitations, including a ban on capturing, maintaining onboard, unloading, or selling sardines on national holidays. Additionally, transferring sardines to a different auction than the corresponding port is prohibited, as is the same vessel unloading at more than one port in a single day.
