Intense Rainfall Hits Algarve

This morning, intense rainfall lasting about 20 minutes caused significant flooding in Moncarapacho (Olhão) and in shops and basements in Albufeira. According to the Civil Protection source, a total of 13 incidents were reported across various areas of the Algarve, although fortunately, there were no personal injuries.

The Algarve District Emergency Command noted that the rainfall occurred rapidly between 10:58 AM and 11:18 AM, leading to the highest number of incidents in Albufeira, including five on public roads. Moncarapacho also experienced flooding, but thankfully, none of the incidents were serious.

Additionally, a roof collapsed in a warehouse in Silves due to the heavy water load, but, again, no injuries were reported.

Civil Protection Response

The Civil Protection confirmed that there was no need to reinforce their resources, as local fire departments managed to handle all occurrences effectively. Currently, the flooding has been resolved, and water drainage is returning to normal.

Weather Warnings

The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has issued a yellow warning for the Faro district until 3 PM today, due to predictions of locally intense showers, potentially accompanied by thunderstorms. The warning will remain in effect from 3 AM to 9 PM on Friday, with the possibility of hail showers occurring intermittently.
