The Coimbra Railway Station will close its doors on January 12, 2025, marking the end of an era for local commuters. The final train will depart at 12:20 AM on Sunday.
As part of the Mondego Mobility System (SMM) construction, the railway connection between Coimbra B and Coimbra (also known as the New Station) will be permanently deactivated.
Starting on January 12, 2025, all connections to the Coimbra Station will be suspended immediately after the last train departs, allowing for construction work to convert the railway line to a Metrobus solution.
In the interim period until the SMM segment linking Portagem to Coimbra B is operational, Metro Mondego will provide a free bus transfer service between the two stations, with stops clearly marked for passengers.
Many locals are expressing their discontent over the closure, with Raquel Sabina stating, "I think the station should not close; it is very useful for those who work and study here." César Pegado echoed her sentiments, highlighting the station's importance for daily commuters, especially since most commerce is in the downtown area.
On January 10, various local organizations, including the Public Services Users Movement (MUSP) and the Coimbra Union of Trade Unions (USC), will hold a 'wake' for Coimbra-A Station, emphasizing the community's loss.
