Activists Take a Stand
Supporters of the Climáximo movement, which fights against climate change, took action on Saturday by turning off Christmas lights in several streets of Lisbon, including Alameda Dom Afonso Henriques, Avenida da Liberdade, and Baixa-Chiado. They also extinguished the lights on the Christmas tree in Terreiro do Paço. In a powerful statement, they adorned the tree with decorations that read "climate resistance."
A Call to Action
The spokesperson for the protest, Maria Mesquita, a 22-year-old youth activity leader, warned visitors and families about the dangers posed by the climate crisis. She highlighted the recent tragic events in Valencia, where over 250 people died due to catastrophic flooding caused by fossil fuel combustion. Maria stated, "Hundreds of families will have an empty seat at their Christmas table. The governments and companies continuing to burn fossil fuels are turning our planet into a real hell. We, the common people, must enter into resistance and stop them, now. What kind of world are we heading towards?"
In their statement, the collective urged everyone to heed the most important message of this decade and join the climate resistance, as time is running out.
