Alexandra Leitão's Commitment to Lisbon
The PS candidate for the Lisbon City Council, Alexandra Leitão, made a strong commitment this Wednesday, stating she will "roll up her sleeves" to tackle the issues facing the city. She emphasized that Lisbon deserves leadership characterized by vision, dedication, and determination.
Through her social media channels, Leitão expressed her "enormous honor, pride, and sense of responsibility" in accepting the invitation from PS leader Pedro Nuno Santos.
"Lisbon is my city. A vibrant city, full of talent and potential, which deserves leadership with vision, commitment, and determination," she declared.
Leitão promised to "roll up her sleeves for a Lisbon that resolves people's problems."
Support from PS Leadership
The PS Secretary-General confirmed on Tuesday evening that Alexandra Leitão is the party's choice to lead its candidacy in the upcoming municipal elections. Pedro Nuno Santos described her selection as a strong commitment to Lisbon, asserting that she is "the right person" for the job, highlighting her track record of achievement and realization.
"The choice of Alexandra Leitão for the Lisbon City Council is very simple. The capital is very important, and Lisbon is being poorly governed by the PSD and the current mayor. Therefore, the PS had to make its biggest bet," he told reporters.
According to Santos, Leitão is one of the most important figures in the PS, second only to himself and party president Carlos César. He criticized the current administration for its inability to address critical issues like hygiene, security, mobility, traffic, and housing.
Alexandra Leitão's Background
Alexandra Leitão was elected parliamentary leader of the PS in April following the early legislative elections, where she was the top candidate for the Santarém district. She is a member of the PS National Secretariat and coordinated the party's electoral program in the last legislative elections. Previously, she served as the Minister of State Modernization and Public Administration from 2019 to 2022 and as Secretary of State for Education from 2015 to 2019. In her last legislative term, she chaired the Parliamentary Commission on Transparency and the Status of Deputies.
In 2022, former PS leader and Prime Minister António Costa had offered her the parliamentary leadership, which she declined.
