Weather Advisory Update from IPMA

The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has issued an updated weather advisory for the Madeira archipelago this afternoon.

Wind Conditions:

  • Northwest winds ranging from 31 to 38 km/h and can reach up to 50 km/h. Strong gusts may occur, peaking at 62 to 74 km/h early on.

Visibility:

  • Generally good to moderate, with some areas experiencing weak visibility.

Wave Forecast:

  • North Coast: Waves from the NW will be 5 to 6 meters, gradually decreasing to 4 to 5 meters.
  • South Coast: Waves from the W/SW will be 2 to 3.5 meters, tapering down to 1.5 to 2 meters, with the W part reaching 4 to 5 meters, decreasing to 3 to 4 meters.

Given these conditions, the Harbor Master of Funchal urges the maritime community and the general public to exercise caution:

  • Secure moorings and maintain close surveillance of docked and anchored vessels.
  • Avoid walks near the sea or in exposed coastal areas, such as harbor breakwaters, cliffs, or beaches, to prevent being caught off-guard by waves.
  • Refrain from engaging in recreational fishing, especially near cliffs and areas prone to wave impact, as the sea can easily reach seemingly safe zones under these conditions.
