Shocking Incident at Villas-Boas' Residence
André Villas-Boas, president of FC Porto, recounted the violent assault on caretaker Avelino Teixeira, 64, that occurred on November 22, 2023. While providing security for Villas-Boas' home, Avelino was attacked by four men at the main gate, leaving him bloodied and severely injured. Villas-Boas was the first to assist, bringing Avelino inside and administering first aid before emergency services arrived.
"Avelino was completely dazed, unable to speak coherently. He wanted to pick up the items scattered on the ground. I told him to come inside for his safety. I washed him, treated him, and provided first aid. He had a gash on his head and was bleeding profusely," Villas-Boas explained.
This incident is part of a troubling pattern of violence near Villas-Boas' home. Just a month earlier, insulting graffiti appeared on his walls, coinciding with speculation about his potential candidacy for FC Porto's presidency. Hours before Avelino's attack, firecrackers were set off near the residence, perceived as intimidation against the future candidate.
Despite the Public Ministry asserting that the assault was not related to football, Villas-Boas expressed concern about a possible connection to previous violent acts, prompting him to call the police.
Upon hearing the doorbell, Villas-Boas was unable to identify Avelino immediately. He requested police patrol due to the recent disturbances. When he opened the gate, he found Avelino collapsed, bleeding from deep wounds after being forcibly removed from his car and beaten by a group of four assailants, who also stole his vehicle.
With police on the way, Villas-Boas called for an ambulance and provided initial assistance. Grateful his daughters did not witness the traumatic scene, he stated, "I was fortunate that my daughters did not wake up to see Avelino bleeding in the house. The trauma would have been much greater."
Caretaker's Memory of the Attack
Avelino, who has little recollection of the assault, recalled waking up in the hospital the following day, confused about his circumstances. Before the attack, he had already experienced a frightful night, noting the loud explosions of firecrackers around 1 AM, which prompted him to urge Villas-Boas to park his car inside the gate to prevent vandalism.
The four suspects, two of whom are in preventive custody and the others under house arrest, face 19 charges, including qualified theft, simple damage, and robbery.
