Storm Éowyn Brings Severe Weather Alerts

Portugal is set to face intense weather conditions as various districts on the mainland and the Madeira and Azores archipelagos are placed under yellow warnings this Friday and Saturday due to heavy rain and maritime agitation. The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has issued alerts for the districts of Porto, Aveiro, Viana do Castelo, and Braga from 6 PM Friday until midnight Saturday due to expected rainfall.

Additionally, Lisbon and Leiria are under yellow warnings for maritime agitation until noon Thursday and again from 6 PM Friday to 6 PM Saturday. The coastal regions of Porto, Viana do Castelo, Faro, Setúbal, Beja, Aveiro, Coimbra, and Braga will also experience yellow warnings from 6 PM Friday to 6 PM Saturday, with wave forecasts of 4 to 5 meters from the northwest.

The northern coast of Madeira and Porto Santo are under yellow warnings due to maritime agitation until 3 PM Thursday, with similar wave heights expected. The western group (Flores and Corvo) is also under yellow warning due to wave conditions from 6 PM Thursday to midnight Friday.

Severe Weather Expected in the UK

Beyond Portugal, the British Isles are bracing for potentially catastrophic weather, with reports of a once-in-a-century storm. In Ireland, a red warning has been issued, predicting wind speeds of at least 180 km/h. This storm is expected to have strength comparable to that of a hurricane.

The rare red warning for very strong winds has been issued for parts of the UK, covering Northern Ireland from 7 AM Friday to 2 PM, and parts of Scotland from 10 AM to 5 PM. The warnings highlight “very dangerous conditions” and “widespread disruptions.” Meteorologists have also warned of the possibility of tornadoes across parts of the UK before the storm hits, raising concerns for life-threatening conditions due to an explosive cyclogenesis or weather bomb, accompanied by strong winds, rain, snow, and intense gusts.
