IGAI's Conclusion on PSP's Operation
The Diário de Notícias reports that the Inspeção-geral da Administração Interna (IGAI) has concluded that the police operation in Martim Moniz, conducted on December 19, 2024, adhered to all legal and specific requirements. This operation aimed at criminal prevention included the closure of Benformoso street, searches, and the immobilization of individuals.
According to IGAI, these actions were justified by the conditions and objectives of the special operation aimed at ensuring the safety of both the police involved and the public, with no recorded excesses in their implementation.
Government's Stance
In January, during a hearing with the Minister of Internal Administration, Margarida Blasco, she denied that the government ordered the police operation at Martim Moniz. Blasco explained that the operation was necessitated by indications of violent crime involving bladed weapons. She cited 52 complaints from residents and workers in the area, alongside one attempted homicide, which prompted the investigation.
Local Criticism
The operation was met with criticism from Miguel Coelho, president of the Santa Maria Maior Parish, who labeled the police action as merely “for show off”. He argued that such operations are “wrong” and ineffective, stating they breed hatred and compromise the principles of a democratic state that respects human rights. Coelho emphasized that it is unacceptable to cordon off an entire street for identification purposes, especially with minimal results, as he expressed in an interview with CNN Portugal.
