Civil Protection Issues Urgent Flood Warning
The constant rain is causing Portuguese and Spanish dams to release water, increasing river flow and consequently the risk of flooding.
The warning primarily affects the Santarém district. The Civil Protection advises residents to take preventive measures, such as removing animals and agricultural equipment from at-risk areas and avoiding travel on flooded roads.
"An increase in inflow from Spain is expected, leading to higher dam discharges," states the public notice issued by Civil Protection this afternoon. The affected communication routes are concentrated in the municipalities of Azambuja, Benavente, Salvaterra de Magos, Coruche, Golegã, Cartaxo, Santarém, Almeirim, Abrantes, Constância, Vila Nova da Barquinha, and Torres Novas. Authorities warn that the risk of overflow from the Tagus River banks is high, potentially flooding historically susceptible areas.
"The soils are already saturated, which will lead to a slow decrease in water levels currently affecting roadways," the statement reads.
