The agency will be located in the former residence of the director of Santa Maria Airport in Vila do Porto. This significant event is organized in collaboration with the Azores Government and the Vila do Porto Municipality.
Strategic Importance of the New Location
The announcement was made by the President of the Regional Government of the Azores at the beginning of September, emphasizing that this initiative will bring prestige and geostrategic importance to the region. José Manuel Bolieiro highlighted that activities related to space transportation will be developed on the island, fulfilling promises made in recent years. He stated, “We are providing content of future, modernity, excellence, and, above all, prestige and geostrategic dimension for Santa Maria and the space ecosystem we are building here.”
Future Plans for Space Exploration
Furthermore, the mayor mentioned that Santa Maria could see a return space flight by the end of the year. In an interview with Executive Digest, Ricardo Conde, President of the Portuguese Space Association, explained that Portugal has a number of companies actively participating in major European space missions. He noted, “We are a very active country in space technologies. We work in subsystems across various components, and nearly every mission has companies involved.”
Focus on Sustainability and Digital Transformation
Ricardo Conde elaborated on the main areas of intervention, stating, “Through space technologies, we can create efficient environments in the ongoing process of digitalization and transformation, particularly concerning sustainability. Space is linked to territorial monitoring, which is a cornerstone of sustainability. The potential exists for us to work on information systems to manage our territory effectively.”
