Record Inspections by PSP

In January, the Polícia de Segurança Pública (PSP) conducted inspections on 3,906 foreign citizens, marking an 80% increase compared to the total inspections of 2024. These inspections were part of 279 police operations, leading to 29 arrests due to illegal status in Portugal and document forgery.

Increased Operations

The PSP has also ramped up its efforts, increasing the number of operations by 50%. This surge is attributed to the PSP's commitment to training and activating specialized teams nationwide focused on inspection and oversight activities. According to a statement from the PSP, the January results show a remarkable 50% increase in actions taken compared to the entire previous year, alongside an 80% rise in the number of foreign citizens inspected.

Additional Actions Taken

In addition to the arrests, the PSP issued notifications for 14 individuals to voluntarily leave Portugal and flagged 94 others with pending legal actions, including arrest warrants and entry bans into Europe. They also documented 195 violations under the Foreigners Law.

Security Responsibilities

These inspections were carried out by the foreign and border control units coordinated by the Nucleus of Inspection of the Integrated Border Management Department. The PSP is responsible for ensuring airport security and border control across several major airports in Portugal, including Lisbon, Porto, Faro, and others.
