A New Era for Algarve's Economy
Laboratories, office spaces for 15 companies, and a clear goal: boosting the local and regional economy connected to the sea. The construction of the future Blue Hub of Algarve, located at the Fishing Port of Olhão, commenced on Friday, April 4.
About the Blue Hub
Covering approximately 2000 square meters (m²) with an 800 m² footprint, this project is a collaboration between the Municipality of Olhão, the University of Algarve, the Portuguese Institute of Sea and Atmosphere, Docapesca, and the S2AQUAcoLAB – a Collaborative Laboratory for Sustainable and Intelligent Aquaculture.
The space will feature laboratories and office areas, functioning as a living lab for the development of services, products, and technologies in the fields of biotechnology, aquaculture, and the food industry, including new technologies and robotics as well as the enhancement of marine resources.
Economic Impact
It is estimated that the hub will facilitate the incubation and establishment of 15 companies and create around 90 jobs, primarily in skilled positions, thereby growing and stimulating the local and regional economy related to the sea.
The ceremony was attended by several regional entities, including José Apolinário, President of the Algarve Regional Coordination and Development Commission, Paulo Águas, Rector of the University of Algarve, Sérgio Faias, President of Docapesca, and Pedro Pousão, President of S2AQUAcoLAB, along with members of the Blue Fund, representatives from the scientific community, and maritime sector entrepreneurs.
The Blue Hub of Algarve will arise from the rehabilitation and expansion of a building in the port area of Olhão, providing a conducive environment for research and development of innovative solutions, while promoting collaboration among companies, educational institutions, and research centers.
“The Blue Hub is expected to significantly contribute to the economic growth of the region, creating new job opportunities and enhancing Algarve's competitiveness in the maritime sector. Furthermore, this initiative aligns with national strategies for the valorization of ocean resources and the promotion of the blue economy,” stated António Miguel Pina, Mayor of Olhão.
