A Unique Cultural Addition to Great Yarmouth

A Portuguese pavement mosaic, believed to be the first of its kind in the UK, is set to be installed in Great Yarmouth as part of a new sculpture trail.

Mosaic Design

This 30 square meter exhibit, designed by Portuguese artist Rui Ferreira, will depict King John I of Portugal and Philippa of Lancaster, commemorating their marriage in 1386. The project is part of a £330,000 initiative aimed at enhancing the town's cultural offerings.

Celebrating Portuguese Heritage

Ruben Cruz, founder of Reprezent Arts, which commissioned the mosaic, emphasizes that while similar mosaics can be found across Europe, this would be the first installation in the UK. He expressed hopes for a replica of the mosaic to be created in Lisbon as well.

Mr. Cruz stated, "The idea is to celebrate the links between Portugal and England. The mosaic will be made from Portuguese stone and is estimated to cost around £25,000."

Artistic Process

The mosaic will feature a stencil-like design, utilizing different colored limestone. The stones will be hand-broken to fill in gaps, incorporating white, black, and a special rose stone from Portugal for added color.

Christchurch

If approved, the mosaic will be located outside Christchurch and is part of a larger project that aims to install ten sculptures funded by the government's Town Deals fund.

Community Support

James Bensly, a Conservative councillor, expressed his excitement about the new public art initiative, highlighting its potential to enhance the town's appeal to both residents and visitors.

This initiative aims not only to beautify the area but also to provide an opportunity for the community to engage with high-quality public art.
