Portugal's First Commercial Satellite Launch
Portugal is set to make history with the launch of its first commercial satellite, PoSAT-2, by SpaceX this Tuesday, January 14. This ambitious project, spearheaded by LusoSpace, aims to create a maritime navigation service akin to Waze for oceans, providing real-time information to ships worldwide.
Key Objectives and Revenue Expectations
The satellite will enable the transmission and detection of crucial data, including weather updates, tide information, sea floor conditions, pirate sightings, and emergency alerts. According to CEO Ivo Yves Vieira, LusoSpace anticipates generating annual revenues of €100 million by 2029 through this innovative service.
Satellite Constellation Plans
To achieve comprehensive global coverage, LusoSpace plans to deploy a constellation of 12 satellites. Vieira emphasizes the significance of this venture, stating, "This will be the first Portuguese satellite to generate revenue."
Launch Details
The launch will take place at the Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, USA, using the Falcon 9 rocket. PoSAT-2 will enter orbit at an altitude of 500 km but will later ascend to 550 km via the D-Orbit spacecraft to extend its operational lifespan.
Investment and Technology
The project has attracted an investment of €15 million, funded by the Recovery and Resilience Plan. LusoSpace will utilize the VDES (VHF Data Exchange System) technology, which will enhance data transmission capabilities, establishing the Waze of the Oceans.
In the interim, LusoSpace expects to generate €10 million annually from its current AIS system, with the VDES set to boost revenues significantly starting in 2029.
Educational Endeavors
Another Portuguese satellite, Prometheus-1, developed by the University of Minho, will also launch aboard the Falcon 9. This educational mission aims to teach students about satellite operations and the processes involved in launching into orbit.
Previous Launches and Costs
Portugal has previously sent satellites into space with SpaceX, including MH1 from the Aeros project launched in March. Launching a satellite with SpaceX costs approximately $300,000 for a satellite up to 50 kg, with additional weight costing $6 per kg. SpaceX conducts launches every four months.
