Summary:

  • Ana Paula Martins proposed an honor and medal for António Gandra d’Almeida.

  • The award was based on his dedication to service during his time with INEM.

  • Controversy arose over his dual roles in SNS and as a part-time doctor.

  • Gandra d’Almeida resigned following reports of his accumulation of functions.

  • The Ministry of Defense claimed no knowledge of any illegal activities during the award.

Minister's Proposal for Distinction

On August 14 of last year, the Health Minister, Ana Paula Martins, proposed the awarding of an honor and medal for distinguished services to António Gandra d’Almeida. This recognition came two months after he took over the leadership of the National Health Service (SNS).

Justification for the Award

The proposal was based on Gandra d’Almeida's strong sense of mission and dedication to service, especially during his time as the director of the Northern National Institute of Medical Emergency (INEM), based in Porto. According to a source from the Ministry of Defense, led by Nuno Melo, there was no knowledge of any alleged illegal accumulation of functions at the time of the award.

Controversy Surrounding Gandra d’Almeida

Recently, Gandra d’Almeida resigned from his role as the executive director of SNS after reports revealed that he had been simultaneously serving as a part-time doctor in the emergency departments of Faro and Portimão for over two years while leading INEM.

This situation has raised questions about the appropriateness of the awards and the circumstances surrounding his dual roles.
