Pedro Soares, one of the four resigning members of the Bloco de Esquerda (BE) leadership, has raised concerns about a lack of democratic culture within the party in light of recent internal firings. In an interview with Renascença, Soares expressed his worries about the prevailing atmosphere, stating, “The problem is that we are seeing a huge closure. What we feel throughout these mandates is that internal opposition, minorities, and those with critical positions are subject to a kind of sanitary cordon to prevent them from expressing themselves.”
The controversy centers on the dismissal of two party employees who recently became mothers, prompting Soares to call for greater transparency regarding these actions: “There are attitudes that are creating a crisis in the bloc, which is devastating and generating misunderstanding among many people.”
Soares also directed his criticisms toward Mariana Mortágua, the party's coordinator. He claimed that while the leadership might want to “turn the page” on the controversy, it must first demonstrate political courage to acknowledge mistakes and show humility by admitting there is more to explain rather than asserting that everything has already been clarified.
In response to the four resignations from the political committee by members of the internal opposition, Mortágua downplayed their significance, stating that they remain in the Mesa Nacional and have long had a “political distancing” from the BE leadership. During a press conference, she rejected the idea of an internal inquiry into the matter but announced plans to review the status of party employees. This decision was made public at a press conference held in a hotel in Lisbon following a meeting of the National Board, which is the highest authority between conventions. Mortágua asserted that all necessary clarifications regarding the situation were provided during the Saturday meeting.
