IndieLisboa Festival Unveils Its 2024 Program

The IndieLisboa international independent film festival is set to take place from May 1 to 11, showcasing a diverse lineup across three main sections: Retrospective, Focus, and Director's Cut. Celebrating Binka Jeliaskova

Jeliaskova, a pioneering figure in Bulgarian cinema, is honored for her contributions during a time when few women directed films. The festival will present nine of her films, including the notable The Tied Up Balloon (1967), which faced censorship under the communist regime. This marks only the second comprehensive retrospective of her work outside Bulgaria, featuring 35mm prints from the Bulgarian National Film Archive.

Spotlight on Charlie Shackleton

The Focus section highlights Charlie Shackleton, known for challenging cinematic conventions. Notable works include The Afterlight (2021), which uniquely compiles unused film fragments. Shackleton’s latest project, Zodiac Killer Project (2025), explores the concept of a film that remains unrealized, adapting from the book The Zodiac Killer Cover-Up: The Silenced Badge.

Director's Cut Section

Additionally, the Director's Cut section focuses on restored heritage cinema, featuring works by filmmakers like Harry Kümel and Marva Nabili. This section aims to revive classic films and lost gems, providing a platform for historical cinematic narratives.
