Minister's Statement in Parliament
On Wednesday, the Minister of Infrastructure and Housing, Miguel Pinto Luz, addressed Parliament, stating that "CP has not found means" to assist in resolving the issues faced by Fertagus, particularly during peak hours following the schedule changes in December. As a result, passengers have experienced overcrowding on trains between SetĂşbal and Lisbon.
Addressing Potential Solutions
In response to rumors about relocating CP trains to Fertagus, Pinto Luz dismissed this option, emphasizing that the government is "monitoring and optimizing schedules with Fertagus" and ensuring that "no one is left stranded". He firmly stated, "We will not return to previous schedules."
Union Proposals and CP's Response
Pinto Luz highlighted that the suggestions to utilize CP's rolling stock during peak hours originated from unions. He also mentioned that discussions with CP included the possibility of their personnel covering this service, which the company deemed "not feasible".
Current Situation and Usage Increase
He noted, "Today the situation is more stabilized, with a 34% increase in usage in SetĂşbal", and assured that solutions have been found to alleviate the existing pressure. Importantly, he clarified that the situation with Fertagus is "not related to the green rail pass."
Government's Challenges
Pinto Luz praised the PS for initiating a tender for increasing rolling stock but expressed regret that the current government inherited a situation "with ongoing litigations in court", emphasizing that this will not resolve the problems immediately.
He also recalled that during negotiations with Fertagus, the concessionaire sought an extension of the concession period by 11 years, but they agreed on 6.6 years, noting that the previous government never included the purchase of rolling stock in the negotiation agenda.
Trust in CP's Administration
Finally, Pinto Luz expressed his confidence in the administration of CP, confirming their reappointment.
