  • Prime Minister Luís Montenegro admitted to Santa Maria Hospital for cardiology assessment.

  • Discharged within hours with a favorable prognosis.

The Prime Minister of Portugal, Luís Montenegro, was admitted to Santa Maria Hospital in Lisbon on Friday afternoon. He entered the hospital around 1 PM and was directed to the cardiology department due to some health symptoms. Fortunately, his prognosis was favorable, and he was discharged shortly after 8 PM the same day.

Carlos Martins, the chairman of the hospital's administration board, confirmed the details, stating that Montenegro's symptoms warranted his admission to cardiology, but he was expected to be released within hours. After his discharge, Montenegro announced to the press that he would take the weekend to rest and would resume his normal agenda on Monday.

Earlier that day, Montenegro had public engagements in Lisbon but canceled his afternoon schedule in Alcobaça, which was taken over by the Minister of Economy, Pedro Reis. In the morning, he presided over a meeting regarding the Tejo Cities Park project, where he spoke to reporters shortly after noon.

Marcelo's Concern for Montenegro's Health

The President of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, left an event at the Lisbon Congress Center hurriedly after learning about Montenegro's hospitalization, indicating his intent to check on the Prime Minister's condition. Although he was scheduled to address the media after the closing of the 8th National Congress of the Christian Association of Entrepreneurs and Managers (ACEGE), he did not speak to the press, stating: "Please don't take it the wrong way, but I must leave because the Prime Minister has been hospitalized."

Later, Pedro Nuno Santos, leader of the Socialist Party, expressed his wishes for a speedy recovery to his political rival ahead of the upcoming legislative elections on May 18.
