President's Reaction to Rejected Regional Budget
President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has addressed the recent rejection of the 2025 Regional Budget for Madeira. When asked by journalists about the possibility of early regional legislative elections, he stated, "We cannot put the cart before the horse."
He emphasized the importance of waiting for the process to unfold, mentioning, "The budget has been rejected in general terms, and there will be a vote on the motion of censure. We will wait and see what happens. I am not admitting anything at this point. The representative of the Republic needs to meet with the parties first, and then he will discuss with me, if necessary. Only after that will I possibly meet with the parties."
Acknowledging Challenges
Marcelo acknowledged that it would have been easier for the region's future if the budget had been approved, stating, "It would have been better for the future of the region to have an approved budget. But the parties have every legitimacy to approve or reject the budget," he added during remarks broadcasted by RTP.
