Álvaro Santos Almeida has been appointed as the new Executive Director of the National Health Service (SNS), succeeding António Gandra d’Almeida, who resigned following a journalistic investigation revealing irregularities in his role.
According to sources, Almeida will be tasked with implementing changes to the organizational model outlined in the Government's Program. While the position of Executive Director remains, it will undergo adjustments in its responsibilities.
Álvaro Santos Almeida is a notable figure, having previously served as a PSD deputy and a candidate for the Porto Municipal Chamber in the 2017 local elections. He is currently an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Economics at the University of Porto and holds a PhD in Economics from the London School of Economics. Additionally, he was the President of the Health Regulatory Authority from 2005 to 2010 and directs the Master's program in Health Services Management and Economics.
He also leads a Postgraduate program in Health Services Management and Direction.
