Vila Nova de Gaia's city council has opened the possibility for the construction of a high-speed train station further from the city center, in a less dense area that falls within the National Ecological Reserve. This shift from the previously planned location at Santo Ovídio, which is connected to two lines of the Porto Metro, will also necessitate an extension of the Rubi line. The final decision rests with Infraestruturas de Portugal, the national infrastructure agency.
